A Dollar For Your Thoughts?
04.30.08 (11:15 pm)   [edit]

It has been happening for some time.  The US Dollar has been slowly declining for several years.  Even in the real estate boom, the stability of the dollar was being questioned.  Now that the real estate bubble has popped and we have no real platform to base consumer confidence on, things look bleaker, still.

Things are looking so bleak, in fact, that Iran - the second largest representative of OPEC - has turned its back on the US Dollar and will no longer trade oil using the currency.  To Iran, the dollar is a "worthless piece of paper".

Now that the US Dollar has dropped to such a low value level, I would like to hear what you think.  What is the future of the US Dollar?  Will the currency be replaced with some other currency?  If so, which currency?  Will the replacement be an existing currency, or will a new currency be developed?

Your opinions would be very interesting to hear...

I have no valid opinion. I try to only comment seriously when I have a clue about what I'm talking about, and here, I have nary even a guess.

I have several guesses... but, that's about as much as they are. Guesses. I'm not an economist. I think our currency will soon be replaced by fast food coupons... McDonald's being the lower denominations while Arby's will be the higher bills.

As far as I know... that's exactly what will happen. Or, the economy will just ride out the rollercoaster and get back to what it has been in the past.

It's the uncertainty that's making me squirm.

Gold, people with money are buying gold because our dollar is almost worthless.
People are selling gold and silver jewelty for a big profit now.
I am going to be raiding my jewelry box soon for anything that looks valuable.
They are holding gold parties in some places .

I think that's very plausible. Afterall, isn't our dollar supposed to be backed by gold? But, now that there is so much paper being pumped into the economy, we have exactly what Iran says we have... worthless pieces of paper. I am thinking that we may be on the hunt for gold, ourselves!
