Coming Soon - My Creative Side
05.06.08 (11:45 pm)   [edit]

The only thing I like more than stirring the crowd with my unpopular opinions is stirring my creativity.  In the past, my creativity has been limited to music.  One might say that creating music is my life.  Without it, I would simply cease to exist.

Something that has always held my interest, but I have never been able to afford to pursue is photography.  I have a great eye for composing shots - be it portrait photography, still life, or macros.  It's just, I don't have the cash to get into it.  Especially with digitals running as expensive as they are.

With a stroke of luck, I ran across a Canon EOS Rebel Xs (body only) on E-bay.  With only 13 seconds remaining in the auction, I threw my bid out there.  Time expired with me as the high bidder.  At the completely reasonable price of $10.50, I am now the proud owner of a good quality SLR camera!

A camera body is useless without a lens, of course.  That said, I threw an extra $40 (earned by selling my old cell phone) toward a 35-80mm zoom lens.  This should be a good basic lens for taking portraits.  That'll start me out, at least.

In the coming days, if I take a pic worth sharing, I'll throw them on this blog.  I'm anticipating some good shots.  I just hope I can live up to my own expectations.  In the mean time, I'll share some very poor quality shots I took with a circa-1970's camera.  The exposure meter was broken, so it was hard to estimate the brightness.  The shots ended up over exposed... but still good memories were captured!

(my youngest daughter)

(my older daughters - very over exposed, but not bad for such an old camera)

More, better quality shots on the way in the coming months.  Stay tuned...

By the way... if anybody has any Canon EF-compatible lenses they want to donate or sell to me on the cheap, let me know! ;)

Thanks! These girls are my life. I'm leaving to start a new job, next week. Going to Connecticut. I'm leaving my wife and the girls behind while they finish school. It'll be nearly 4 weeks without seeing them. It's going to be the hardest 4 weeks of my life. I can't stand that thought of missing 4 weeks of their lives.

i like the pictures how they are, i've always found i prefer imperfection.. its more artistic and gives art a more human quality, i suppose.

Much appreciated! It's a very uncertain future we face. So much can go wrong with such a long move. We have very high hopes, though!

Thanks for that! I kind of like the look, as well. The only thing that bothers me is the washed out color. The sky, that day, was a really deep blue. I probably should have opted for a faster shutter speed. But, the over-all look of the image really emphasizes the 1970's abilities of the camera. Even though the pictures were taken this year, the photos have a very '70s charm to them... I dig that!

i have a konica ft-1 from the early 80s.. for all i know its a super crap camera but, i have a lot of fun with it, i get some really interesting pictures out of it, mostly because i have no idea how to use it, or what all the little knobs and switches do :) it sure is a blast to play with though

the sky may have been a really deep blue, but the way the picture turned out, it appears overcast, yet, really bright.. gives the girls somewhat of a radiating appearance..

Older cameras are far superior to newer ones, if you ask me. Maybe the newer cameras have the old ones beat in better optics and the such, but I like the fact that the older cameras are completely manual. YOU control the shot! The newer cameras have auto-focus, auto-aperture, auto-ISO, auto-everything. The only thing it DOESN'T do is compose the shot for you. It kind of takes the fun out of it! That's why I'm going to shoot almost everything in Manual mode! heh heh heh

It would be hard to make a bad picture with subjects such as these. Beautiful girls. Obviously the take entirely after their mother.

Glad to hear about the new job.
